4 Common Types Of Hard Drives

Are you looking for a hard drive for your Dell PowerEdge Server? You first need to understand the following four different types of Dell Poweredge Hard drives available to meet your storage requirements without any hassles.

1SAS (Serial Attached SCSI)

It is a communication protocol, which is most commonly employed in Enterprise hard drives and tape drives. Serial Attached SCSI us a point-to-point serial protocol that swaps the older based parallel SCSI bus technology. It makes use of the general SCSI command set and has additional connections through the top of the SATA connection. Essentially, it is popularly known as a hybrid between SAS and SATA.

2. SATA (Serial ATA)

These hard drives are base hard drives in Dell PowerEdge servers that are designed to swap the older parallel ATA (PATA) standard. These Dell Poweredge hard drives are known to offer more than a few benefits over the older interface, including:

  • Trimmed down size of the cable and cost since there are seven conductors rather that forty
  • More proficient transfer by means of an I/O queuing protocol
  • More rapidly data transfer with the help of higher signaling rates
  • Native hot swapping

On smaller servers with a controller, they can still be cabled for the reason that such systems will not have a backplane. Cabled hard drives are not hot swappable.

3. SSD (Solid-State Drive)

It is a device to store data and makes use of an integrated circuit assembly as a memory for the purpose of storing data persistently. This technology makes use of an electronic interface, which is attuned with customary block I/O (input/output) hard disk drives. SSDs don’t make use of any sort of moving parts that differentiates them from conventional magnetic disks like hard disk drives that are electro-mechanical devices including spinning disks and movable read/write heads.

4. Near Line SAS

These are enterprise SATA 3.5IN drives with the media, head, SAS interface, and rotational speed of customary enterprise-class SATA drives with the completely competent SAS interface typical for classical SAS drives.

Benefits Of SAS & SATA Laptop Hard Drives

The abbreviations may look similar, but they are very much different technologies. Both are the different kinds of laptop harddrives, also used in servers, and each has pros and cons. Let us explore a few benefits of SATA and SAS hard drives.

SATA Hard Drives

SATA is the current development of the ATA hard drive from the 1990s and early 2000s, as used in home desktop computers. Every computer sold today comes with SATA-II or SATA-III, now often with SSD.

Benefits of SATA Hard Drives

1.   Good storage for infrequently-accessed data – An ideal use for SATA is storage for backup snapshots, media, images, or files. A large RAID-protected SATA-based array will work wonders, as the writes/reads are more often than not sequential.

2.   Sequentially quick – SATA is really good at writing sequentially. It is capable of 6 Gbps throughput, and can actually write at that rate, if no random reads or writes are engaged.

3.   Cheaper than SAS – SATA hard drives are usually 75% less than similar SAS hard drives. So hosting providers can offer more storage space at a lower cost – or at a higher profit margin. And dedicated server customers can make the most of larger storage, such as backup drives.

SAS Hard Drives

SAS is the current development of the SCSI interface drives used in higher-end workstations and servers. The same as consumer laptops that come with 1TB laptop drives, the majority of modern servers come with SSD or HDD – but quicker and more dependable. It is the de facto standard used by enterprises.

Benefits of SAS Hard Drives

1.   Better suited to 24/7 workloads – SAS is made for servers, and often have 100% duty cycles. Unlike SATA drives for a home desktop, which has 20-30% duty cycles, SAS is made to read or write data all day, every day. SATA failures are even unpredictable by comparison.

2.   Quicker throughput – SAS hard drives can read/write and process data in a fraction of the time as SATA – especially on random read/writes, and especially with the latest 12 Gbps disks making use of the most modern RAID hardware controllers. Even though SATA is good at sequential data, random IOPS are terrible.

The Final Take

Even though SATA may be fine at home, or on a cheap server, but it is just not acceptable for use by mission-critical focused hosting providers.

9 Characteristics to take into account before falling for a laptop

Even if the technology has evolved in a miraculous way, to the point that today these devices that fit in our pockets are capable of almost everything, the laptop is still essential for certain tasks. The rise of telework in this disrupted period is a perfect illustration of this. This is probably the reason why manufacturers, including Apple, still sell more than one hundred million PCs and Macbooks each year.

But finding a laptop can be complex, due to the plethora of choices. Here is a checklist to better understand which characteristics correspond to your preferences.

1. The Operating System

Contrary to what we sometimes hear, Mac and PC are not interchangeable. And Mac OS or Windows will be your first fundamental choice, before you even look at the different models available to you. The answer to this question will indeed determine both which device to go to, but also the potential software investments.

Apple computers have a built-in advantage in that they can run Windows (via Boot Camp or in a virtual machine), while trying to run Mac OS on a Windows machine (something called "Hackintosh" ) requires sleight of hand probably under black magic.

Consequence: if you are a fan of Windows and you plan to do most of your work on this platform, avoid Apple products. Unless you want to pay more for hardware that is not intended for Windows, especially with regard to the keyboard.

2. Weight and Shape

Do you want a touch screen or it is useless? Is full HD resolution enough, or would you prefer to pay more for a 4K screen? Which format is best for you: the standard 16: 9 or rather a 3: 2? And finally, what about the screen size? Your choices will have a direct impact on the weight and shape of the computer.

By definition, every laptop is portable, but to what extent? If it stays on your desk most of the time, with only an occasional trip to a conference room or cafe, the weight is probably not that important. On the other hand, for those who collect a few thousand miles per month, an extra kilo quickly becomes a burden.

The choice of shape is closely linked to the weight. Do you prefer a traditional shell or will you make good use of a 2 in 1 like the Surface Pro or the Yoga line from Lenovo? In general, engineering that goes into making a lighter-than-average laptop or an exotic-shaped computer tends to drive up costs. And in general, the heaviest component of a modern laptop is the battery, the next criterion precisely.

3. The Battery and its Autonomy

The battery has changed dramatically in recent years and modern laptops are finally starting to last. But there are still many models that will not exceed 4 to 5 hours of autonomy. Which may be enough for you, depending on how you work.

4.  Processor and Graphics Card

Which processor to choose? And will the integrated graphics processor be enough for your use, or do you need an additional graphics card? Most people overestimate the importance of basic daily processor usage.

In general, an Intel Core i5 or i7 will offer adequate performance with good productivity (avoid the i3, for low-end consumer PCs). As for the graphics card, if you play or make video, it is necessary. But for the common man, the integrated graphics processor will be more than enough.

Remember to get a fairly new processor. It is not advisable to go beyond one or two generations behind the current range. In 2020, this means a Core 8 th  generation or more. Thus, you will benefit from the latest improvements in security and energy management.

5.  Memory

How much RAM, or RAM, do you need? There are inexpensive laptops with 4 GB of RAM, which guarantee rather poor performance.

Typically 8 GB is enough for common productivity tasks. Configure the system with 16 GB if you regularly perform demanding tasks such as photo and video editing, or if you plan to run one or more virtual machines on a regular basis. Developers and engineering professionals can even go up to 32 GB.

It is very rare to be able to change the RAM on a laptop. It is therefore important to know these specifications well from the start. If you are not sure, choose the higher value.

6.  Storage

The rule for storage is the same as for RAM: the more there is, the better. Especially since it is not always easy to add afterwards.

In terms of hardware, there are many types of laptop hard drives today there is no valid reason to choose something other than an SSD or NVMe. When it comes to the amount of storage, 128 GB is the bare minimum, and only if you keep most of your data in the cloud and store few media files.

Even if you use the Cloud, pay attention to the connectivity of the external storage. Support for SD cards can be useful, for example, but for high-performance external drives, focus on Thunderbolt 3.

7.  Keyboard and Pad

There are different styles of laptop keyboards, and you can't know which one will make you happy unless you try them out personally, for at least a few days of normal work.

This is why the after-sales question is so important. Never buy a new laptop without ensuring a return policy that is valid for at least 14 days, with no restocking fees. (And if you plan to use this laptop regularly in a dimly lit area, such as an airplane cabin or conference room, insist that the keyboard be lit).

As for the touchpad, its size is a matter of personal preference. The only rule, on Windows, is to insist on precision, which offers a complete range of configuration options in Windows 10. Invariably, when a complaint concerning the shaky behavior of touchpads appears, it is on a system which uses equipment that does not meet this standard.

8.  Connectivity and Bluetooth

Wi-Fi standards are currently in the transition phase, with products that support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), which is just beginning to be deployed. But will you really need the latest network technology? Most people will do very well with 802.11ac technology.

Support for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) and Bluetooth 5, on the other hand, is a must, with advantages in terms of energy consumption, range and reliability obviously very useful with devices that exist today

The only network technology that remains an expensive option today is mobile broadband. It's convenient, but it's also relatively difficult to find. If you think you'll be using it enough to make it worth it, this choice will narrow your laptop options down to a very short list.

9.  Biometric Authentication

Many people will likely be perfectly happy without the help of biometrics. Still, this option will do you a lot of services, including not having to spend your time retyping your code or constantly changing it.

The fingerprint readers of modern Windows laptops have become very powerful, but there is something magical about sitting and logging in doing nothing but looking at your PC. Highly recommended.

What are the Hard Drive Features, Specifications and Performance

Hard drives are necessary so that the hardware devices of our pc are recognized with all their functionalities and possibilities by our Operating System. When locating and installing these drivers, the exact model of the hardware device and the operating system (Windows 95, windows 98, windows 2000, windows Xp) in which we try to install them must be carefully taken into account. Generally, each hardware component like graphics card, sound card, television card, network, modem, printer, scanner, etc. has its own drivers and for different operating systems.

Hard Drive Features, Specifications and Performance

After choosing what type of Hard disks to buy, the next thing to consider is the drive's specifications and performance. These are the characteristics that you have to look at:

Storage capacity: The consumer-oriented hard drives that you can buy in stores offer you a capacity between 500 GB and 12 TB. Choose the space that best suits your needs, and if you are undecided keep in mind that it is always better that you give yourself more space than you need.

Transfer speed: The data transfer speed is closely linked to the type of connection used by the unit (USB 2, USB 3, eSATA). In addition, in the case of mechanical hard drives, the speed of rotation of the drives also influences. The cheapest HDDs spin at about 5,200 revolutions per minute, while the most expensive and powerful are 7,200 rpm. The transfer speed on SSDs is not affected by revolutions, but varies (and a lot) depending on the type of memory and the flash technology used.

Security:  If you are going to save sensitive information, it is convenient to pay attention to the security measures offered by the different models of external hard disk. Some offer you a basic experience, while others have been specially designed to provide maximum security by storing your data with additional measures such as encryption, specific protection software and other useful tools.

Connectivity: One of the most important characteristics that you have to take into account when buying an external hard drive are the connections it has, both to ensure that the unit is compatible with your devices and for the file transfer speed. You can find units with USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 2 and 3 connections and even with Wi-Fi connectivity to be able to use it with any device with Internet connection.

Durability:  External hard drives wear out with time and use. HDD durability varies depending on the model and its characteristics, some start to fail after 12 months, while others have a useful life of more than six years. Modern SSDs tend to last longer, with an average failure rate of 2 million hours, while modern HDDs have an average failure rate of 1.5 million hours. However, for long-term offline storage of backups, HDDs are more reliable than SSDs.
